How to Change Brake Pads With Basic Tools

A brake pad job can save serious money against garage labour rates, but only if the car is supported correctly and every fixing goes back exactly where it belongs. Learning how to change brake pads with basic tools is well within reach for a competent DIY mechanic, provided the vehicle has a conventional hydraulic braking system and you do not rush the safety checks.

Brake pads are not a part to guess at. Buy pads specified for your exact registration, engine and brake system, and inspect the discs while the wheel is off. If a disc is badly scored, cracked, heavily lipped or below its minimum thickness, fitting new pads alone is false economy. Replace discs and pads as an axle pair.

Before you start: know when a pad change is suitable

Most front pads can be changed with hand tools, but the job varies between vehicles. Sliding calipers are the usual straightforward setup. Fixed multi-piston calipers, wear sensors, electronic parking brakes and rear calipers that need winding back can require additional tools or a diagnostic service mode.

Do not start if the brake pedal is spongy, brake fluid is leaking, a caliper is seized, or a warning light suggests an ABS or electronic parking brake fault. Those are repair issues, not simply worn-pad issues. Likewise, never work under a vehicle supported only by a trolley jack.

Check the pad thickness through the caliper inspection gap where possible. Around 3 mm of friction material is the sensible point to plan replacement. A high-pitched squeal may be a wear indicator, but noise can also come from glazed pads, dirty shims or a corroded disc.

Basic tools for changing brake pads

For a standard front-pad replacement, gather the equipment before lifting the car:

  • A trolley jack, correctly rated axle stands and wheel chocks
  • Wheel brace or impact socket set, plus the correct sockets and ratchet for caliper bolts
  • A breaker bar if the wheel bolts are tight, and a torque wrench for refitting
  • Flat screwdriver or small pry bar, brake piston wind-back tool or large clamp, and a wire brush
  • Brake cleaner, clean rags, nitrile gloves and a suitable high-temperature brake lubricant
  • New pads, any supplied shims or clips, and new caliper guide-pin bolts if the manufacturer specifies replacement

A basic socket set is enough on many cars, but do not substitute the wrong-size socket or use an adjustable spanner on a tight caliper bolt. Rounded fasteners quickly turn a one-hour job into a recovery problem. Affordable workshop essentials such as axle stands, impact sockets and brake service kits are worth keeping ready rather than borrowing unsafe or worn-out gear when the pads are already down to the backing plate.

How to change brake pads with basic tools safely

Park on level, solid ground. Select first gear or Park, apply the parking brake when working on the front axle, and chock the wheels that will remain on the ground. If you are working on rear brakes, follow the vehicle procedure for the parking brake instead. On cars with an electronic parking brake, it may need to be put into maintenance mode before the caliper is removed.

Loosen the wheel bolts by a quarter turn while the tyre is still on the ground. Find the manufacturer’s jacking point, raise the vehicle and place it securely on axle stands. Lower the jack gently until the stand takes the weight, then leave the jack touching the lifting point as an added precaution where practical. Give the vehicle a careful push before removing the wheel. If it moves, it is not safe enough to work on.

Turn the steering to give better access when changing front pads. Look at the caliper before taking anything apart. Identify the brake hose, bleed nipple, guide pins, retaining spring and pad clips. Take a photo if the layout is unfamiliar. It takes seconds and can prevent a misplaced clip later.

Remove the caliper without straining the hose

Some calipers use a spring clip on the outer face. Lever it out carefully and keep it clean for reuse if it is not supplied with the new pad kit. Remove the guide-pin bolts, which are commonly hidden under small plastic caps on the rear of the caliper. Hold the guide pin with a spanner if it turns with the bolt.

Lift the caliper clear of the carrier. Do not allow it to hang from the flexible brake hose. Support it on a purpose-made caliper hook, a strong wire hanger or a secure point on the suspension. Pull out the old inner and outer pads, noting which pad carries a wear sensor or locating spring.

Remove the stainless-steel pad clips from the carrier if fitted. Corrosion beneath these clips can pinch the pad ears, stopping the pads from sliding freely and causing uneven wear. Clean the carrier contact points with a wire brush and brake cleaner until the new clips sit flat. Keep cleaner away from painted surfaces and never blow brake dust into the air with compressed air.

Retract the piston and check the fluid level

Before pushing the piston back, remove the cap from the brake-fluid reservoir and place a clean rag around it. As the piston retracts, fluid returns to the reservoir. If it is already near the maximum mark, remove a small amount with a clean syringe or suitable extractor. Do not spill brake fluid on paintwork.

Use the old pad against the piston face, then press it back slowly with a clamp or piston tool. A slow, even movement is the key. For many rear calipers, the piston must rotate as it retracts, so use a wind-back kit rather than force it with a clamp. If the piston will not move, comes back out, or the rubber boot is torn, stop and investigate the caliper condition.

Check that the reservoir has not overflowed. Brake fluid should only be topped up with the correct specification shown on the reservoir cap or handbook. Mixing unsuitable fluid is an expensive mistake.

Fit the new pads and reassemble correctly

Fit new clips and shims where supplied. Apply a very thin smear of brake lubricant only to the pad ears where they slide in the carrier and to the back of the pad where it contacts a shim or piston. Keep all lubricant off the friction material and disc. Contaminated pads can reduce braking and often need replacing.

Slide the pads into the carrier. They should move freely but without excessive play. Refit the caliper over the pads, reinstall the guide-pin bolts and tighten them to the vehicle manufacturer’s torque setting. There is no universal figure worth guessing. Refit the retaining spring, sensor connector and guide-pin caps, then check the hose is not twisted or trapped.

Before refitting the wheel, inspect the disc surface and the brake hose again. Fit the wheel, tighten the bolts lightly in a criss-cross pattern, lower the vehicle, then torque the wheel bolts to the correct specification. Repeat the complete process on the other side of the same axle. Never replace pads on one side only.

The checks that matter after a brake pad change

With the engine off, press the brake pedal several times until it becomes firm. This seats the pistons against the new pads. Skipping this step can leave you with little or no braking on the first press of the pedal.

Check the brake-fluid level, refit the reservoir cap and look around both calipers for leaks or loose parts. Start the engine and confirm the pedal still feels normal with servo assistance. On the first road test, choose a quiet route and brake gently at low speed. Listen for abnormal grinding, pulling, rattling or a soft pedal. Stop immediately if anything feels wrong.

New pads need bedding in. For the first 150 to 200 miles, avoid repeated hard stops where traffic allows. Use several controlled, moderate stops to build an even transfer layer on the discs, allowing the brakes to cool between them. A faint smell during early use can be normal; smoke, severe vibration or a hot wheel is not.

A proper brake pad replacement is simple work done carefully: correct parts, solid vehicle support, clean sliding surfaces and verified torque. Keep those standards, and basic tools can deliver a safe, professional result without paying over the odds for the equipment.
