A safe method for removing stubborn bolts

Start by confirming the impact wrench is set to reverse. It sounds obvious, but forcing a bolt tighter with a high-torque tool is an expensive mistake. Seat the socket fully and hold the tool square to the fastener rather than at an angle.

Apply short bursts first. This allows the hammer action to work without overheating the tool or putting unnecessary strain on the bolt. If the fastener does not move after several controlled bursts, stop and assess it. Constant hammering for a minute rarely improves the result and may damage the fixing.

For a rusted bolt, clean exposed threads with a wire brush where possible and apply penetrating fluid. Give it time to work. Gentle heat on the surrounding metal can also help, but never use heat close to fuel lines, brake hoses, bearings, rubber bushes or flammable fluids. If heat is not appropriate, alternating brief tightening and loosening attempts can sometimes crack the corrosion bond.

When an impact wrench should not be your first choice

There are jobs where hand tools are the better option. Small bolts threaded into aluminium, such as rocker-cover, sump or inlet components, can strip or snap easily. A compact ratchet gives you the feedback needed to feel whether the fastener is moving normally.

Avoid using an impact wrench to remove seized brake bleed nipples, glow plugs or small exhaust studs unless you understand the risk and have a plan if they break. These parts can turn a routine service into drilling, thread repair or component replacement.

An impact wrench is also not the tool for final tightening. Wheel bolts must be tightened to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque with a calibrated torque wrench. Impact tools are excellent for speeding up removal and running bolts down, but they do not replace accurate final torque.

What to do if the bolt still will not move
