A trolley jack under the sump is not a substitute unless the repair information specifically permits the support point and you protect the sump correctly.

You may also need new fasteners. Timing repairs commonly involve torque-to-yield bolts, particularly around mountings or pulleys. Reusing stretch bolts because they still look clean is a false economy. Fit the specified replacement bolts and tighten them in the required sequence, torque and angle.

A careful approach to PureTech timing work

Before stripping anything down, read the procedure for the exact engine. Timing jobs are detail-heavy, and the details change between versions. The broad working sequence is simple, but no two engines should be treated as identical.

First, inspect the old belt and surrounding area. On wet-belt engines, check for cracking, frayed edges, missing teeth, swelling or belt material deterioration. Also inspect the oil pick-up system if the repair information calls for it. Debris from a degrading belt can circulate in the oil and create problems beyond the timing cover.

Next, rotate the engine only in its normal direction of travel and bring it to the prescribed setting position. Fit the crank and cam locking tools without forcing them. A locking pin that needs heavy pressure is a warning sign that the engine is not correctly positioned, the wrong tool is being used or an incorrect procedure is being followed.

Once the timing components are fitted and tensioned, rotate the engine manually through the specified number of turns with the locking tools removed. Return it to the timing position and confirm that the tools reinstall cleanly. This final verification is one of the strongest safeguards against an avoidable comeback.

Common mistakes that cost garages time

The most expensive mistakes are usually made before the new belt is even fitted. Turning the crankshaft and camshafts independently can lose the relationship between them. Using paint marks as the main reference can reproduce incorrect existing timing. Forcing a cam locking plate into place can bend the tool or mask a timing error.

Another frequent issue is overlooking the oil requirement. Where the engine uses a belt-in-oil system, use the exact approved oil specification for that engine. The wrong oil can contribute to premature belt deterioration. A timing repair that ignores the original cause may only delay the next failure.

Do not assume that an engine which starts has been timed correctly. It may idle and still have reduced performance, warning lights or correlation faults. Scan for stored codes, complete the prescribed relearn or reset operations where applicable, and road-test the vehicle before handover.

A multi-application timing kit can be a sensible workshop purchase when it lists the relevant 1.2 PureTech engine code and includes the correct pins and plates.
