A jockey wheel for trailer use is a small component with a big job. It supports the trailer drawbar when uncoupled, helps line up the hitch, and makes loaded trailers far easier to move around a yard, workshop or job site. Choose the wrong one and you risk a bent tube, a sinking wheel, a damaged clamp or an awkward trailer that refuses to go where you need it.
For regular towing, a jockey wheel should be selected like any other working piece of equipment: by capacity, fitment, ground conditions and the way the trailer is actually used. A cheap light-duty wheel may suit a small domestic trailer parked on level concrete. A plant trailer, livestock trailer, enclosed box trailer or heavily loaded work trailer needs more support and a stronger mechanism.
Why the Right Jockey Wheel for Trailer Use Matters
The jockey wheel carries part of the trailer’s nose weight when the trailer is detached from the tow vehicle. It is not designed to carry the full gross trailer weight, but it must safely support the vertical load placed on the drawbar. That load can be considerable, especially with machinery, building materials or tools positioned towards the front of the trailer.
A properly sized wheel also saves time. Instead of lifting a drawbar by hand or struggling to reposition a trailer, you can wind the coupling to the correct height and manoeuvre it accurately. This matters in busy garages and yards where space is tight and trailers need to be connected, moved and stored efficiently.
There is a trade-off. Bigger, heavier jockey wheels cost more and add weight, but they offer better stability, longer service life and more confidence under regular use. For a trailer that earns its keep, overspecifying the wheel is usually better value than replacing a light-duty unit after one hard season.
Start With Nose Weight, Not Trailer Size
The most common mistake is choosing a jockey wheel based only on the trailer’s overall size. The key figure is nose weight: the downward force at the coupling point. This changes depending on how the trailer is loaded.
A balanced trailer should have enough nose weight for stable towing, but not so much that it exceeds the vehicle or towbar limit. When parked, that same nose weight is transferred through the jockey wheel. Check the trailer manufacturer’s specification, then consider the loads you carry most often. A trailer used for occasional garden waste will have very different demands from one carrying compact plant equipment or a full set of site tools.
Always choose a jockey wheel with a safe working load comfortably above the maximum expected nose weight. Do not treat the stated capacity as a target. It is a limit. Extra margin is sensible where trailers are used on uneven ground, moved while loaded or subjected to daily workshop use.
The clamp and mounting bracket must be rated to match. A high-capacity wheel fitted to a weak or poorly secured clamp does not create a high-capacity setup. Inspect the drawbar diameter or A-frame mounting point before ordering, and make sure the clamp style is compatible.
Fixed, swivel and automatic styles
A fixed jockey wheel is simple and effective where the wheel can remain in position during travel or where clearance is not an issue. It is often a practical choice for smaller trailers with straightforward duties.
A swivel jockey wheel pivots upward and locks in a raised position. This keeps it clear of the road while towing and avoids the need to remove the assembly each time. It is a popular option for working trailers because it is quick to use and less likely to be left behind in the yard.
Automatic or heavy-duty retractable units are built for faster operation and greater durability. They are worth considering on commercial trailers that are coupled and uncoupled repeatedly through the day. The initial cost is higher, but so is the saving in time and effort.
Select the Wheel for the Ground It Will Meet
Wheel material affects manoeuvrability, grip and durability. There is no single best option for every trailer.
A solid rubber wheel is dependable on hard surfaces such as concrete, tarmac and paving. It cannot puncture and generally needs little attention. It is a sensible all-round choice for garages, driveways and storage yards.
A pneumatic wheel rolls more easily over gravel, rough ground and uneven site surfaces. Its larger contact area can reduce sinking on softer ground, but it needs tyre pressure checks and can puncture. For trailers that regularly cross fields or loose stone, that extra mobility can be worthwhile.
A solid plastic or nylon wheel is typically found on lighter-duty units. It can work well for occasional use on smooth, dry ground, but it is less forgiving on broken surfaces and may wear faster under frequent heavy loads.
Wheel diameter matters too. Larger wheels roll over thresholds, potholes and loose material with less effort. Small wheels are compact and affordable, but they can dig in or stop abruptly at small obstacles. If you regularly move a loaded trailer by hand, a larger wheel is usually money well spent.
Tube Diameter, Travel and Handle Design
The outer tube needs to suit the clamp, while the inner tube and winding mechanism need to cope with the working load. Common sizes may look similar at a glance, but a mismatched tube will not clamp securely. Measure before buying rather than relying on an old description or a rough estimate.
Lift travel is equally practical. The jockey wheel must lower far enough to lift the coupling clear of the towball, even when the trailer is on uneven ground. Too little travel can turn a simple uncoupling job into a frustrating one, particularly with tall tow vehicles or loaded trailers sitting nose-high.
Look at the winding handle and gearbox arrangement as well. A smooth, protected mechanism makes a real difference when operating in wet, muddy or cold conditions. Heavy-duty units often use stronger gears and a more substantial handle, which reduces flex and makes raising a loaded drawbar more controlled.
Fit It Properly and Use It Safely
Even a quality jockey wheel will fail early if it is mounted badly. The clamp should sit squarely on a sound section of drawbar, with bolts tightened securely and checked periodically. Do not fit it close to damaged steel, excessive corrosion or a point where the frame could deform under load.
Before uncoupling, park on the firmest and most level surface available. Apply the trailer handbrake where fitted and use wheel chocks before lifting the hitch off the towball. A jockey wheel supports the drawbar – it does not replace proper trailer braking or chocking.
When moving a trailer by hand, keep the load sensible and avoid sudden direction changes on slopes. A jockey wheel can help guide a trailer, but it cannot make a heavy loaded trailer safe to push across a steep or loose surface. Use a vehicle, winch or suitable mechanical assistance where required.
Make these checks part of normal trailer maintenance:
- Inspect the clamp, bolts and welds for movement, cracks or corrosion.
- Check that the wheel turns freely and the winding handle operates without slipping.
- Look for worn tyres, damaged rims or a bent inner tube.
- Clean off mud and grit, then lubricate moving parts where the manufacturer recommends it.
When a Jockey Wheel Is Not Enough
For extended storage, soft ground or an uneven load, the jockey wheel may need support. A purpose-made wheel pad or a solid timber block beneath the wheel spreads the load and reduces the chance of sinking. Never use unstable loose blocks, bricks or improvised supports that can crack or shift.
A loaded trailer should also be supported by suitable stands where maintenance is taking place. Do not rely on a jockey wheel alone while working beneath, around or inside a trailer with a shifting load. The same workshop rule applies here as it does with lifting equipment: support the load with equipment designed for the job.
Buy for the Work You Do
A light, inexpensive jockey wheel can be the right purchase for a small trailer used a few times each year. For trade use, regular towing or heavier loads, choose a stronger unit with a higher working load, a reliable clamp and a wheel suited to the surfaces you work on.
The right setup makes coupling faster, parking safer and trailer handling far less physical. Measure the drawbar, check the genuine nose weight and buy enough capacity for the hard jobs, not just the easy ones. That is how a simple trailer accessory becomes dependable working equipment.
