What to Check Before Buying a Car Scissor Lift

A car scissor lift can free up valuable workshop space while giving you fast access to brakes, wheels, suspension and underbody components. But lifting equipment is not a tool to buy on price alone. The right model must suit the vehicles you work on, the concrete beneath it and the jobs that make your workshop money.

For a busy garage, a scissor lift is often a practical alternative to a two-post lift. It has a compact footprint, is easier to position in smaller bays and can be a strong choice for tyre work, servicing and inspections. For serious DIY users, it can turn jobs that normally involve axle stands and crawling on the floor into safer, quicker work.

Start with lifting capacity, not the sale price

Capacity is the first specification to check. A 2.5-tonne car scissor lift may be suitable for many hatchbacks, saloons and smaller SUVs, but it is not automatically right for every vehicle that enters the workshop. Consider the heaviest vehicles you realistically expect to lift, including loaded vans, electric vehicles with heavy battery packs and larger 4x4s.

Do not choose a lift that only just matches the weight of your usual vehicle. Allow a sensible margin. A higher-capacity lift gives more flexibility as vehicle sizes change and avoids limiting the work you can take on later.

Also look beyond the headline tonnage. Check the platform length, width between platforms and minimum lifting height. A low-profile lift is useful for lowered cars and vehicles with low sills, while longer platforms better support larger wheelbases. If you work on a mix of cars and commercial vehicles, these dimensions matter as much as the maximum load rating.

Will the car scissor lift fit your workshop?

Measure the bay before ordering. That means more than checking whether the lift itself fits on the floor. You need room to open doors, move a trolley jack, position wheel equipment and walk safely around the raised vehicle. Consider where the hydraulic power pack, control unit and cables will sit too.

Ceiling height is equally important. A mid-rise scissor lift can be an efficient option where overhead clearance is limited, especially for wheel, brake and bodywork tasks. A full-rise model offers better access underneath, but only if the roof height allows the vehicle to be raised safely without creating an obstruction.

The floor must be suitable for the equipment. A sound, level concrete slab is essential. The required concrete thickness, condition and anchoring method depend on the individual lift, so always follow the manufacturer’s installation requirements. Do not install heavy lifting equipment on cracked, uneven or questionable concrete simply because the floor looks solid.

Decide what work the lift needs to earn its keep on

A scissor lift is highly effective for routine repair work. It makes tyre changes, brake replacement, suspension checks, exhaust repairs and underseal inspections far more efficient than working at ground level. It is also useful in a home garage where space does not allow a permanent two-post installation.

There are trade-offs. The platforms and lifting structure can restrict access to some areas under the centre of the vehicle. For gearbox removal, major transmission work or full underbody access, a two-post lift may be the better long-term choice. A scissor lift can still be the right buy, but it should match your regular work rather than the one job you might do twice a year.

Low-rise units are typically best for tyre bays, valeting, quick servicing and home workshops. Mid-rise lifts provide more comfortable working height without needing a large building. Full-rise scissor lifts are built for heavier workshop use and improved under-vehicle access, but require greater investment, space and installation planning.

Check the power supply and controls

Before buying, confirm whether the lift requires a standard single-phase supply or a three-phase connection. Many smaller workshop and home-use units are designed around single-phase power, while larger commercial lifts may need three-phase electricity. Sorting this out after delivery can mean unnecessary delay and extra electrician costs.

Look for clear, simple controls with a reliable lowering function and an emergency stop. The lift should have mechanical safety locks that engage as it rises, not rely solely on hydraulic pressure to hold the vehicle. A proper lift is built to work hard, but its safety system is what protects the operator when a hose, valve or electrical component eventually needs attention.

Safety checks that should never be skipped

A lift only performs safely when it is used correctly and maintained properly. Read the supplied instructions, train anyone using the equipment and ensure the vehicle is positioned on the designated lifting points or platforms. Never exceed the rated capacity, lift an unbalanced vehicle or work beneath a vehicle that has not engaged its safety locks.

Before each use, inspect hydraulic hoses, fittings, locking mechanisms, platforms, cables and controls for wear or damage. Keep the lift area clean and free from oil, tools and loose parts. If anything looks bent, leaking or unreliable, take the lift out of service until it is checked.

For commercial workshops, planned inspections and maintenance are part of running safe equipment, not an optional extra. Keep service records, follow the manufacturer’s maintenance intervals and make sure the installation meets the relevant workplace and electrical requirements in your area.

Buy for dependable daily work

The cheapest lift is rarely the best value if it has limited parts support, unclear specifications or poor safety equipment. Focus on rated capacity, build quality, lifting range, platform dimensions and the support available after purchase. A well-chosen car scissor lift pays back through faster turnaround, less strain on the technician and a cleaner, more capable workshop bay.

Irish Tools Shop supplies affordable, reliable workshop lifting equipment for garages, mechanics and serious DIY users. Choose the specification that suits the vehicles and work in front of you, then give it the correct installation and maintenance from day one.
